A day held in common

A quiet invitation to join in time: prayer, repentance and mercy, kept without public displays of devotion. Choose a safe way to take part—or simply use the shared hours as a guide.

Choose a way to participate

Your safety comes first. Do not change medication or medication schedules for this observance. Stop any fast if you feel unwell, and seek medical advice if fasting may put you at risk.

Children and anyone pregnant or nursing, living with diabetes, or with a history of an eating disorder should choose non-food participation. There is no need to explain your choice to anyone.

Optional prayer pauses

The shared time window is measured in Jerusalem time. Select only the pauses that suit your day. Midnight is shown on its actual local calendar date; sleep need not be interrupted.

The browser-detected time zone is selected by default. If your browser does not provide one, UTC is used; you can choose any supported time zone above.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

2 Chronicles 7:14

1Humble themselves
2Pray
3Seek my face
4Turn

then — I will hear · I will forgive · I will heal their land

This promise is spoken in the setting of Solomon’s temple and Israel’s covenant. Its application to this worldwide invitation is a Christian devotional reading, not a guarantee that a timed fast produces a particular political, medical, or supernatural outcome.

Who is called

“My people, which are called by my name.” The call goes to all Israel — and to every one grafted in by the atonement. The wild olive branch, Paul says, was “graffed in among them”; those once strangers are “no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints”; and “if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed.”

Jew and Gentile, near and far: an invitation to seek God together. These Christian readings do not require Jewish participants to accept Christian theology or this house’s calendar. Agreement with the reckoning is not a condition of joining.

Why together, and why now

“Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: gather the people… Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD.” Joel’s fast is not private; it is called, timed and shared.

Esther asked the Jews of Shushan to fast with her for three days before she went in to the king. Ezra proclaimed a fast at the river Ahava, “and he was intreated of us.” Nineveh fasted from the greatest to the least, and God turned. The church at Antioch fasted together, and the Spirit spoke.

This house reckons the tenth day of the seventh month — the day appointed for Israel to “afflict your souls” — to fall on 6 October 2026. The invitation rests on that conviction, not a universally established calendar date.

The house anchors its month at the full moon and numbers complete Jerusalem sunrise days, placing its tenth day on October 6. The received Jewish calendar places Yom Kippur on September 20–21, 2026. Leviticus 23:32 says “from even unto even”; numbering a house day from sunrise does not erase that explicit observance boundary. This invitation’s October 6–7, 06:00-to-06:00 meeting window is a voluntary shared prayer schedule, not a claim that Leviticus prescribes morning-to-morning Atonement.

The fast that is chosen

“Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free… Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry?… Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer.”

And one guard: “When thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face; that thou appear not unto men to fast.” The hour is shared; the manner stays hidden. Fast together in time, and in secret in spirit.

A prayer that rends the heavens

A model, not a formula. Pray it in your own words, or pray it as written, at any of the hours above — and especially at evening.

O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy: we humble ourselves before thee this day. We have sinned, and have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly. To us belongeth confusion of face; to thee belong mercies and forgivenesses.Dan 9:4–9

We are called by thy name. We seek thy face, and not thy hand only. Turn us again, O LORD God of hosts; cause thy face to shine, and we shall be saved.2 Chr 7:14 · Ps 80:3

We turn from our wicked ways. We lay down the cloaks we took from men, we vomit up the morsel of the king’s table, we renounce every other spirit. Take away the filthy garments, and clothe us with change of raiment.Zech 3:4

Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness. Doubtless thou art our Father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, thou knowest all. In wrath remember mercy. Spare thy people, O LORD.Isa 63:15–16 · Hab 3:2 · Joel 2:17

We live and breathe by thy grace. Yet it is written that in Christ we can do all things, and that we overcome not by might, nor by power, but by thy Spirit. Turn us, and those we fear or oppose, toward repentance and mercy. Who art thou, O great mountain? Before thy people thou shalt become a plain.Phil 4:13 · Zech 4:6–7

Oh that thou wouldest rend the heavens, that thou wouldest come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence, as when the melting fire burneth, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the nations may tremble at thy presence.Isa 64:1–2

But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand. Be not wroth very sore, neither remember iniquity for ever: behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.Isa 64:8–9

Hear from heaven. Forgive our sin. Heal our land. The Spirit and the bride say, Come. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. Amen.2 Chr 7:14 · Rev 22:17, 20

This is a composed prayer with biblical quotations and adaptations, not a single passage of Scripture. Its confession and imagery are voluntary; no enemy is designated for harm, and no imminent death or disaster is forecast. Zechariah addresses Joshua and Zerubbabel in their own settings; Philippians 4:13 speaks in the context of contentment through abundance and need.

How to keep the day

  1. Set the hour. Add the fast to your calendar now, and note the start in your own time zone above.
  2. Choose your participation. Prayer and mercy without food abstention, a safe non-food abstention, or food fasting only if appropriate for you. No duration or method is required; keep it quietly.
  3. Choose prayer pauses. Any of the suggested times, even five minutes at one. Midnight is optional; you need not interrupt sleep or caregiving.
  4. Read as you go. 2 Chronicles 6–7, Joel 2, Isaiah 58, Daniel 9, Isaiah 63–64.
  5. Do the chosen fast. Give the cost of the meals you skip to someone hungry, and loose one burden you have power to loose.
  6. Finish gently. If you have fasted from food, eat gently and give thanks. Do not wait for the clock if you feel unwell.
  7. Go deeper. The Mouth That Breathes Fire on oil, fire and the petition; Prayer for the language of this house.

You can participate fully without abstaining from food. If you are pregnant or nursing, diabetic, under 18, or have a history of disordered eating, choose non-food participation. If you have a medical condition or take medication, seek appropriate clinical advice before food fasting. Do not change medication schedules or abstain from necessary fluids; stop fasting if unwell. The LORD looks on the heart.
