As the maxim stands in every mouth that coined it, Scripture quotes it verbatim and files it: "Let us do evil, that good may come? whose damnation is just"[1] — the slander against grace, Romans 3:8. Its canonical spokesman is the sitting high priest: "it is EXPEDIENT for us, that one man should die for the people" — the purest end-justifies-means sentence on record, spoken to authorize the murder of the Mediator. It is the serpent's founding ethic — a good end (ye shall be as gods) offered by a crooked road — and the wolf's standing accounting ever since. For the creature the verdict never softens†: the creature cannot see the destination and was never asked to purchase it with bent means. The Nobody declines the mayhem-script; Abigail stays the raised hand; the censer goes up, and the fire that comes down is never the intercessor's to aim.
Capitalize the sentence and it converts whole, because the End is a Person: "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and THE ENDING" — self-identified three times, declaring the end from the beginning because He occupies both[2]. In His mouth, justified is a courtroom verb rendered from the finished side of history — which is why Romans 8:30 dares the past tense for the future: "whom he justified, them he also GLORIFIED" — glorification written as accomplished, the Judge announcing from the end of the corridor. Justification is the End's verdict arriving early: the white certificate issued mid-scarlet, faith-to-fact in forensic form. And unpack the verb and the whole At-One-Ment stack is inside it[3]: justified freely… set forth to be a PROPITIATION… that he might be just, and the justifier — and the propitiation-word, hilastērion, is the Septuagint's name for the Mercy Seat: the kapporet, the covering-lid, the root of Kippur itself. God set Him forth as the Mercy Seat — the at-one-ment surface moved from behind the veil into the open street — and "he ever liveth to make intercession." Justification, propitiation, intercession: one office, three angles, all of it the End's verdict arriving early — certified annually by a scarlet thread at a door, until the certification changed venue and the thread hung crimson for forty years over officiants who never asked where the whitening went.
The means, plural, are us — vessels, signets, clerks, sowers: instruments justified rather than agents self-justifying. But mean is the old English for the middle, and the Mean, singular, has a name[4]: "one God, and ONE MEDIATOR between God and men" — mesitēs, the middle-man — the officer Job cried for by the oldest title in the case: "neither is there any DAYSMAN betwixt us, that might lay his hand UPON US BOTH" — at-one-ment as anatomy, arms opened wide enough on the tree to hold both ends at once. He is the Mean of history — the cross at the fulness of time, the point where the accounts averaged out to grace — and the middle wall came down because the Middle-Man stood where it used to. Which exposes the oldest business plan on record[5]: the husbandmen's council is literally a resolution to cut out the middleman — "this is the HEIR; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance" — remove the Son sent between Owner and vineyard and deal with the estate "directly," which meant keep it. Psalm 2 is the same committee at cosmic scale. And the emporium's oldest trick completes the indictment: those who gave in to their carnal lusts were dead set on cutting out the Middle-Man precisely so they could install themselves as middlemen — the toll-booths, the merchandise of the flock, the feigned words. The carnal mind wants no mediator above it and every mediation-fee below it. Until the appointed time — which was always in the lease.
The evil apparatus was never a rival administration; it was a leased instrument with a term sheet[6]. Purpose, stated in the canon's own voice: "the LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil"; the vessels of wrath endured with much longsuffering that the riches of glory be made known; "I have created the WASTER to destroy" — followed in the very next verse by "no weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper": the Maker of the waster is the reason the weapon fails. Time, metered to the hour: Assyria wielded as the rod and punished when the work is performed; "this is YOUR hour, and the power of darkness" — allotted, and only an hour; the loosing itself scheduled with the divine must, for a little season; the beast-coalition's unity installed by God with an expiry clause — "until the words of God shall be fulfilled." His ways are above our ways — and the higher-ways clause sits, in its own chapter, between the abundant pardon and the seed to the sower: the method to the madness is the mercy, delivered by ways too high to audit. The adjudication of every evil mean is Joseph's single wordplay: "ye MEANT evil against me; but God MEANT it unto good" — the meaning of the means belongs to God. He never does evil that good may come; He does not need to. He overrules what others mean, absorbs it at the tola on the tree, and issues what He meant from the foundation — their accounts remaining their own, His counsel standing entire. There was a method to His madness. Romans 8:28 was always in effect[9] — synergei, the co-labor verb: all things, willing and unwitting, working together according to a purpose declared from the end.
The Cyrus principle runs all the way down to idiom†. "All's well that Ends well" carries James 5:11's own clause: "ye have seen the END OF THE LORD (to telos kyriou); that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy"[7] — the Lord's character read at the telos, Job's latter end blessed more than his beginning, Ecclesiastes' spine (better is the end of a thing than the beginning), and the Omega's own sign-off: "behold, I make all things new… these words are true and faithful." The proverb is eschatology in street clothes. "Ways and Means"carries more[8]: the earthly committee of that name is the revenuecommittee — Caesar's-coin administration, the machinery of render-unto run by the mint that eclipses — but the true portfolio convened first: the Ways ("my ways are higher than your ways" — seated between the abundant pardon and the seed to the sower) and the Means — the Mean, the Daysman — with a chairman who holds both in one self-identification: "I am THE WAY… no man cometh unto the Father but by me". The Way is the Means; the committee is a committee of One; the disciples' first name was people of the Way; and the rival committee's hidden agenda was always a single line-item — route the revenue around the Mediator and through the booth. The language itself, it turns out, was conscripted centuries deep: the idioms are unwitting clerks, keeping payloads older than their speakers, and addressed.
Lowercase, the sentence built every gallows from Haman's to Caiaphas's — the expedient murder, the seized inheritance, the booth where the Daysman stood. Capitalized, it empties them: the End, who declared Himself from the beginning, justified the means — freely, by grace, through the Mean with a hand on both — before the instruments knew they were instruments.
His ways were above our ways the whole time. The apparatus was leased, metered, and called. There was a method to the madness, and the method was mercy. All is well that Ends well — and it Ends well, because the End is very pitiful, and of tender mercy, and He holds the sentence from both sides. Romans 8:28 was always in effect.
