The loop, step by measured step: warmth from above deepens the active layer (borehole temperature profiles bend downward from the surface — permafrost thaws top-down, and the profiles are the receipts) → the thawed peat dries under rising vapor-pressure deficit → ignition arrives from overhead too (high-latitude lightning is measurably increasing with the warming) → the burn reaches legacy carbon — radiocarbon-old peat that regrowth does not repay — with an extreme boreal season now releasing on the order of 2–3 GtCO₂, roughly a twelfth of humanity's annual output from one country's forests → the added carbon narrows the damper → more warmth from above. A self-stoking loop with measured gain below one: amplifier, not fuse (~0.1–0.3 °C added by 2100 in the assessments) — the fire of Isaiah 9:18 that "kindles in the thickets" and no longer needs its arsonist, running at instrument-verified strength. And the audit of the basement: the geothermal floor-heater (0.087 W/m²) has warmed the permafrost's underside forever — it is what sets frozen ground's maximum depth — and it is steady on every meter above. A bottom-up defrost surge is the same unhideable surge as the vent throttle: it answers to the same board. The intersection is real; the exemplars burn on camera; and the defroster, by every borehole on the registry, points down from the sky the stokers narrowed — the fever thawing the fuel, the old fires waking in it, exactly as the watchman's texts describe a wickedness that burns as the fire.

HONEST ACCOUNTING — THE REGISTRY'S OWN FENCES
Coverage confession: ~26% of the seafloor mapped at modern resolution; an estimated ~100,000 seamounts stand taller than a kilometer — any of which could, in principle, awaken — and only a handful are instrumented. A new eruption at an uncharted mount would be locally unseen, exactly as Mayotte's was: that is the standing argument for the sensors this registry pleads for, and for the essay The Unwatched Deep. Yet locally unseen is not globally unknown — the hydrophones hear whole basins, the seismographs found Mayotte on day one, and the helium ledger sums every vent that runs long enough to matter. Mayotte's two-edged lesson: a supereruption-scale event ran unseen by any eye — and was caught by the meters on day one; hidden from sight is not hidden from the instruments. Local honesty: at basin scale the vents genuinely matter — Gakkel warms its under-ice water column measurably, Mayotte heated its neighborhood — the scale separation is local-yes, global-no.
