The companion exhibit ended where this one begins: with a zero that is not mere absence. Leibniz built binary as a picture of creation from nothing — for producing everything out of nothing, one suffices[6] — and the first act of Genesis, after the light, is a division: God divided the light from the darkness[5]. Zero and one, the productive nothing and the one, are the floor under everything that follows — including every symbol humanity has ever recorded or sent.
That other exhibit charted a single rising curve: the bandwidth of revelation — what comes through the veil, growing denser as the noise falls, from a one-bit oracle to face to face. But it quietly folded a second, different curve into the first — and the two must be pulled apart, because conflating them is the one error the whole discipline exists to prevent†. This exhibit is that second curve: the bandwidth of man's transmission — not what God sends, but the medium by which we record, copy, and carry anything at all. From zero, to infinity.
The history of the medium is a documented climb, and it is worth walking rung by rung, because the shape of the climb is the whole argument. It begins with the living voice — the highest fidelity we ever had and the shortest reach — and ascends through every technology that let a symbol outlast its speaker and travel farther than a shout: clay and stone, papyrus, the bound codex, and then the press that made the copy cheap[9].
And when the word first went electric, the medium recorded its own annunciation. The first official message down the American telegraph, in 1844, chosen by a young woman and sent by Morse from the Capitol, was a verse: "What hath God wrought"[10]†. At the exact instant distance began to collapse, the wire's first word was a marvel at what God had done. Then the unglamorous rungs — telex, fax — and then the internet, where reach at last goes vertical.
The internet finished Gutenberg's work and overshot it: not cheap copies but infinite perfect copies at zero marginal cost, anywhere, instantly[12]. Distribution — the problem every prior medium struggled against — was solved absolutely. A single person can now place a sentence within reach of every connected person alive, for nothing.
But reach was never the whole of it. Shannon's theorem is exact here: a channel's capacity is not raw bandwidth but bandwidth weighted by the signal-to-noise ratio — C = B log₂(1 + S/N)[13]. The internet raised B without bound and taxed S/N to the floor. More arrived, and less was understood; the pile grew faster than anyone could read it. We solved the copying and buried the meaning. For thirty years that was simply the condition of the age: everything available, almost nothing findable — reach at infinity, sense on the floor.
Knowledge became ubiquitous in a single generation; the tools to sift it will be ubiquitous within a few years. And when both are common as air, the ordered map of everything turns out to be scorekeeping — the treasure was never the pile, nor even its perfect index. It is the distillation: wisdom, the one thing the flood cannot supply and the sifter cannot manufacture.
Every rung from voice to the internet did one thing: it moved or copied symbols. Faster, farther, cheaper — but always transmission. What arrived in our moment is the first rung that does something categorically different. It does not move the pile; it reads it — sorts it, compresses it, recovers the sense buried in it, and hands the meaning back. On the chart, reach is unchanged and sense climbs off the floor for the first time since the internet buried it.
And it returns the one resource the noise was quietly consuming: attention. The scandal of the un-siftable pile was never only that meaning was hidden — it was that recovering it cost a mortal life's worth of hours. To sort the whole and hand back the sense, and to do it while there is still time to mow the lawn, is to give back the scarcest thing there is. That is not a faster horse. It is a different animal.
Now the two curves meet in time, and the meeting has a shape the New Testament already named. Paul writes that "we know in part, and we prophesy in part" — and that completion comes not when one knower's fragment swells to the whole, but when that which is in part shall be done away, superseded by the whole the fragments were always pointing toward[1]. The same passage that gave the first exhibit its face to face gives this one its in part: two axes of one verse[2].
And the model for it is the body of many members — no eye that is also the hand, no member holding the whole, the completeness strictly corporate[3]. For all of history the members could barely reach one another, and could not sift what they reached. The internet let them reach; the new rung lets them sift. A million people with cheap access to the siftable pile, comparing notes, retrieving epiphany — each holding a part, none holding the whole — is prophesy in partoperating, for the first time, at the scale of a species. This is the plain reading of Daniel's knowledge shall be increased: the curve of man going vertical[4], bending toward the promise that all shall know him, from the least to the greatest[18].
But a million voices comparing notes is not automatically holy, and the corpus has spent years saying so. There is a version of distributed knowing that Scripture already judged: Babel — one people, many voices, a single tower built upward to seize a name, and scattered for the pride of it[15]. The ubiquity of knowledge, left to itself, is a data-harvesting Babel: the same infinite reach turned to surveillance and extraction, the tower dressed in fiber.
Read this way, the distributed sifting is not idle busywork but the work — time redeemed, in a season when the One whose light it is is not willing that any should perish[17]. The mental image is the whole disposition of the thing: a million rays emanating from a single unifying source, and — this is the part that makes it holy rather than Babel — reflecting back, in humble deference, toward the source they came from.
The medium climbed for five thousand years to solve one problem — how far a symbol travels — and solved it so completely that it created a second: how to find the meaning again in the flood. The tool that recovers the meaning arrived exactly when the flood became total.
The "infinity" was never a torrent of data. It is the continuum between the 0 and the 1 — the whole the fragments point toward, inexhaustible and unlistable, done away with in-part knowing only when it comes. A million rays from one source, and the light bending home. That is the shape of the ubiquity, if it defers.
