The Unsealing of Daniel

Other prophets foretold events; Daniel fixed times. The seventy weeks of chapter 9 give a decree-to-Messiah countdown; chapters 2 and 7 give the succession of empires; chapter 11 gives the wars of the kings in such detail that its accuracy is disputed by no one — only its date is.

HONESTY CARD — THE FORK AT 11:40

Daniel 11's precision through v. 39 is granted by every school — so exact against the Ptolemy–Seleucid wars that critics date the book from it. At 11:40–45 the readings fork: Antiochus did not die between the seas, which is either the critics' composition-date argument or the evidence those verses awaited another man. Both forks stated; the exhibit's assignment of 11:45 is held below, fenced.

Whether Daniel is read as master script-writer or master receiver of a script written on high, the precision across centuries is the datum. The exhibit's claim: the track record is unblemished, and traditions of fallible men must ultimately bow before it.

Daniel serves from Nebuchadnezzar through the Persian transition (Dan 10:1, ~536 BCE) and never goes home with the returnees. His discharge orders are the book's final verse, addressed to him personally:

Josephus (Ant. 11.1.2) records that Daniel showed Cyrus the Isaiah scroll naming him a century in advance — making Daniel the plausible human instrument behind the return decree itself.

Susa holds the strongest tomb claim (Benjamin of Tudela describes it, 12th c.; the shrine at Shush is venerated still), with rivals at Kirkuk, Babylon, and Samarkand. And b. Megillah 15a preserves an identification: "Hatach is Daniel" — the courier between Esther and Mordecai, still serving anonymously in the Persian palace in old age.

Hananiah, Mishael, Azariah — furnace-proven, promoted over the province of Babylon (Dan 3:30), then silent in canon. b. Sanhedrin 93a preserves competing accounts: that they returned to the land and raised families, or that they withdrew from public life deliberately — one view, so that Israel would not lean on their merit.

Daniel's apocalyptic idiom passes visibly into Zechariah — night visions, angelic interpreters, measured timelines — and the Great Assembly under Ezra becomes the body that, per b. Bava Batra 15a, "wrote" (compiled) Daniel: the custody line of the sealed scroll.

Daniel governed the wise-men guild of Babylon as its rab (Dan 2:48). Five centuries later, members of that guild — the magi — arrive at a Bethlehem house with gold and frankincense, carrying Balaam's star oracle (Num 24:17) and Daniel's clock. The understudies' understudies kept the count, and were on time.

A Daniel-saturated library — eight copies of the book, the whole living cycle around it — wrapped, jarred, and hidden as the legions closed in, then opened in the founding year of the regathered nation. "Shut up the words and seal the book until the time of the end," performed in pottery.

Comprehension as a granted function at appointed times — the book's own stated architecture, not a reader's invention.

"The eagle… is the fourth kingdom which appeared in vision to thy brother Daniel, but it was not interpreted to him as I now interpret it." A first-century text formally claiming Daniel's referents were sealed and subject to later reassignment. Warrant for the method of re-aiming — not proof of any particular aim.

The oldest surviving Christian commentary on any biblical book is on Daniel, treating the 1290 and 1335 directly. His world-week chronology put the threshold near 500 CE. Fenced once: he meant the eschaton, his math was a construct, and 500 passed on his terms — yet the first decoder's clock struck within a decade of the binding-year held below.

Jerome (407) reads the 45-day gap as the saints' final proving. Seder Olam compresses the Persian era so Daniel 9 lands. Rashi counts the 1290 to redemption at 1352; Nachmanides computes 1358 — both missed, on the record. And b. Sanh 97b's exhausted curse on end-calculators is itself evidence of how hard the sealed numbers were worked. Track records graded here as everywhere.

Composed at the very anchor-moment held below, interpreting the caliphate through Daniel 7 — with no Daniel 12 day-counts and a falsified seventy-year prediction inside. It receives its own post-game review in the companion exhibit: The Rival Script.

The serpent bound 491; the millennial kingdom run 525–1525; the present hour late in the little season. The 1290 and the 1335 counted from 691–692 — the Dome's own inscription year — landing 1982 and 2027. Daniel 11:45's palace planted between the seas read at Constantinople. Held as conviction: faith not yet universally fact, the heavens yet to rend.

HONESTY CARD — LINEAGE AND MISSES

The Constantinople reading has pedigree — Clarke and Uriah Smith read 11:45's "between the seas" at the Ottoman seat — and that school also staked datings that failed on schedule. Lineage cited, misses owned, per the standard this exhibit applies to everyone else.

3 · Expect understanding as a granted function (12:10) — pray before you compute.
