THE TIME OF THE RETURN · EXHIBIT

1981 — The Year the Run Was Tooled

An architecture year, not an event year: the apparatus of Daniel 12:4 specified and shipped — while the region Daniel served seeded both its peace and its war in the same twelve months.
Consistent-with is never proven-by. No landing is claimed at 1981; the milepost card is worn on the face of the exhibit.
MOVEMENT I

The Claim, Cut to Size

The claim is deliberately narrow. Not that 1981 was prosperous — its regional ledger is blood and collapse as much as charter and plan, and prosperity readings of this year have failed audit and are not made here. Not that anything landed — the advertised markers of Daniel 12:11 are cultic, and the cultic status of the sanctuary was identical on the year's first day and its last. The claim is this: 1981 is the year the architecture of the running-to-and-fro was fixed — the protocols, the personal machine, the visual interface, the democratized networks — the tooling of the run whose running came after. An architecture year can be verified by ordinary historiography, which is exactly what makes it worth anything inside a prophetic frame: no count is needed to certify it, so no count can knock it down.

MOVEMENT II

The Tooling

In one twelve-month span: the Internet Protocol and Transmission Control Protocol were finalized on paper — the constitution of the global network, from which the cutover was scheduled; the IBM PC launched on August 12 and defined the personal platform; the first successful portable shipped and the first commercial graphical interface was announced in the same April; BITNET and CSNET opened internetworking past the defense-funded gatekeepers; and Ethernet — invented in 1973, specified in 1980 — entered commerce. The exhibit rounds no date toward its thesis; the Ethernet card carries its honest chronology as a specimen of the discipline.

MOVEMENT III

The Region, Both Faces

The same year, in the lands Daniel served: the peace architecture was incorporated — the Gulf Cooperation Council chartered in May, the first Saudi framework implying recognition announced in August — and the militant wave crested — jihad for Jerusalem proclaimed at Taif in January, the peacemaker assassinated at his own parade in October, the Islamic Republic's ruling order crystallized through a year of bombs and successions. The offer arrived and the region could not yet receive it: Fez collapsed in hours. Two trajectories, seeded in one soil in one year — and the reader of this site will recognize the shape, because the anchor verse itself has two ancient faces: knowledge multiplied, and evils multiplied. 1981 answers to both at once. So does the present.

MOVEMENT IV

The Mount That Year — Warren's Gate

And at the sanctuary itself, 1981 produced an event of a different kind. In the Western Wall Tunnel — the excavation running along the buried courses of the Temple Mount's western wall — workers broke through into Warren's Gate: the ancient Herodian gateway that once carried priests up into the Temple courts, the gate standing nearest the Holy of Holies, sealed shut since the days of Saladin. Rabbi Yehuda Getz, rabbi of the Western Wall, descended through the two-foot breach with an engineering crew and worked quietly for about a month — until the dig was discovered, confronted from the cistern manholes above, and closed by government order under poured concrete. The pressure to press on was real; the state stood down and sealed the breach instead, and both custodians have enforced the same outcome, from opposite motives, ever since: nobody opens the ground. The chamber tradition beneath that decision is old and specific — Josiah's order, the priest and the paving stone, Maimonides' prepared hiding places — and over all of it stands Jeremiah's verdict: the Ark shall not be remembered, or missed, or made again, for the city itself shall be called the throne of the LORD — completed by John's city that has no temple, because presence has consumed furniture. Read so, the sealed gate is not a treasure denied but a search rendered obsolete: the container holds what the covenant outgrew.

MOVEMENT V

The Forty-Five Years

From the architecture year, the stages are documented and dated: the public web at the decade's turn, the pocket sieve in 2007, and now machines that answer questions asked in plain speech — seeking and finding converging at the very moment the seeker's ability to check every intermediary, in every language, in both directions, reaches every hand.

— COMPUTE (×1981)— PEOPLE (×1981)
Both curves indexed to 1981 = 1. The connected world multiplied ~26-million-fold — and on this shared axis that entire ascent hugs the floor, because peak compute multiplied ~11-billion-fold above it. Users rose; the engine under them went vertical. Compute per living person is the true escape velocity. Free will still walks the ascent.

A verse gives that shape a name. In Daniel 12:7, the man clothed in linen swears the great two-handed oath over the final interval, and the traditions close his sentence two ways: the Hebrew reads "when the shattering of the power of the holy people is complete, all these things shall be finished" — but Theodotion, the church's Greek Daniel, closes it gnōsontai panta tauta"they shall KNOW all these things." On that ancient reading, the appointed interval does not merely end; it ends in knowing — an unsealing into understanding for the sanctified. A span whose terminus is knowledge coheres with a span whose midpoint tooled the means of knowing. The author's conviction, tiered as conviction: the run was tooled so that faith could be vindicated by fact — signal amplified, noise tuned out, the reality of God deducible by anyone who bothers to ask and seek. The tooling is spine; the vindication is the wager.

MOVEMENT VI

The Count, Worn Honestly

CONVICTIONThe milepost reading

The author's chain reads the Dome's self-dated completion (72 AH / 691–692 CE) as the set-up of the abomination, 1,290 years to 1981, 1,335 to 2026 — with 1981 as a milepost, not a landing: the count's knee, unmarked by design, the year the run was tooled; the blessing deferred to the one who waits and attains. The precedent for aiming these numbers from an Islamic-era anchor is Guinness's 1917 — published three decades in advance, landing on a documented transfer of Jerusalem, carried here with its spread-fence in the same breath.

FENCEThe honesty cards

Day-year is interpretive. The Antiochus competitor stands. The 691 anchor rides the abomination clause only — no continual existed in 691 to alter, and this exhibit does not manufacture one. The base-rate objection is carried in full. The in-year hardship ledger is carried in full. The marker-shopping history of the 1981 claim — three candidates auditioned before the dated-ledger discipline was imposed — is disclosed rather than hidden. And the governing texts govern: times and seasons are the Father's; the man who received the numbers was told to go his way and rest.

FENCEPre-registered, before the terminus

Written while 2026 is still open: the blessing-shape of Daniel 12:12 is arrival-and-rest, not an incident the news can carry. If the year closes without an unmistakable act of God, the confessed-miss protocol applies to the chain's arithmetic — and every spine entry of this exhibit stands untouched, because each is true on ordinary historiography. The stones were chosen so that no calendar can knock them down.

APPARATUS

Sources

[1]
Daniel 12:4 (MT / Theodotion / OG)
MT: 'many shall run to and fro (yeshotetu), and knowledge shall be increased.' Theodotion: 'until many are taught and knowledge is multiplied.' Old Greek: 'until many rave madly and the earth is filled with injustice' — the live ancient variant reading evils where MT reads knowledge. Both faces are carried throughout this exhibit; 1981's regional ledger answers to both at once.
[2]
Daniel 12:11–12, with Theodotion's parallaxis
'From the time the continual is taken away (Th: apo kairou parallaxeōs tou endelechismou — the ALTERATION of the continual) and the abomination set up, 1,290 days. Blessed is he who waits and attains the 1,335.' The verse's advertised triggers are cultic — the daily offering and the abomination. Carried honestly: the removal clause anchors at 167 BCE / 70 CE by the record; the Dome (completed 72 AH / 691–692 CE, self-dated in its own mosaics) is the best-qualified post-70 candidate for the SET-UP clause. The 691 anchor rides the second clause, not the first.
[3]
Daniel 12:7, Theodotion's terminus
Where MT and Old Greek close the oath with 'all these things shall be FINISHED,' Theodotion reads gnōsontai panta tauta — 'they shall KNOW all these things.' On the church's Greek Daniel, the interval ends in knowing: an unsealing into understanding for the sanctified. A count that ends in knowledge coheres with an architecture-of-knowledge milepost; the variant is a variant, and is carded as one.
[4]
RFC 791 and RFC 793 (September 1981)
The Internet Protocol (RFC 791) and Transmission Control Protocol (RFC 793) specifications were finalized and published September 1981 — the addressing-and-routing grammar every packet on earth still obeys. The ARPANET's flag-day cutover to TCP/IP was scheduled from these documents (January 1, 1983). The global network's constitution was fixed on paper in 1981.
[5]
IBM Personal Computer, August 12, 1981
The IBM PC (model 5150) launched August 12, 1981, with PC DOS 1.0 (Microsoft's MS-DOS). Its open architecture defined the personal-computing platform: the machine that put the knowledge-tool on the individual desk. Retrospect treats this launch as the industry's founding date.
[6]
Osborne 1 (April 1981) and Xerox Star (April 1981)
The Osborne 1, the first commercially successful portable computer, shipped April 1981. The Xerox Star 8010, the first commercial machine built around a graphical user interface — windows, icons, mouse, desktop metaphor — was announced the same month: ancestor of every windowed screen since. Portability and the visual interface both enter commerce in the same spring.
[7]
BITNET and CSNET (1981)
BITNET ('Because It's Time Network') was founded in 1981, linking universities for mail and files; CSNET launched the same year, deliberately extending network access to computer-science departments OUTSIDE the ARPANET's defense-funded circle — the first purpose-built democratization of internetworking. The run was opened past the gatekeepers in 1981.
[8]
Ethernet, dated honestly
Invented 1973 (Metcalfe, Xerox PARC); the DIX Ethernet specification published September 1980; first commercial products (3Com transceivers) shipped 1981; IEEE 802.3 standardized 1983. Carried on the ledger as COMMERCIALIZATION in 1981 — not introduction. The exhibit does not round dates toward its thesis.
[9]
Third Islamic Summit, Taif/Mecca, January 25–28, 1981
Thirty-eight states convened at Taif under the banner of the Mecca Declaration and formally proclaimed jihad for the liberation of Jerusalem as the cause of the Islamic world. In the same year the run was tooled, Jerusalem was formally re-centered as the umma's cause.
[10]
Gulf Cooperation Council founded, May 25, 1981
The GCC charter was signed at Abu Dhabi May 25, 1981 — Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman. The institutional vessel of the Gulf reintegration documented in the Logistics exhibit (Ministry of Tolerance 2016, papal Mass 2019, Accords 2020, Abrahamic Family House 2023) was incorporated in 1981. Seed, not harvest — the gestation fence applies.
[11]
The Fahd Plan, August 7, 1981 — and Fez, November 25
Crown Prince Fahd's eight-point plan, announced August 7, 1981, included the implicit recognition of all states in the region — the first Saudi peace framework of its kind. The Fez summit convened November 25, 1981 to consider it and collapsed within hours; the plan was adopted in amended form at Fez 1982 and stands in the direct lineage of the Arab Peace Initiative (2002) and the normalization era. In 1981 the offer arrived before the region could receive it.
[12]
Sadat assassinated, October 6, 1981
Anwar Sadat, the first Arab head of state to make peace with Israel, was assassinated by Islamic Jihad officers at his own victory parade, October 6, 1981. Mubarak's thirty-year rule began the same week. The peacemaker was killed FOR the peace — the militant wave's answer to the Fahd Plan's overture, in the same season.
[13]
Iran, 1981 — the consolidation
January 20: the American hostages released under Algerian mediation (Algiers Accords). June 21: President Bani-Sadr impeached. June 27: Khamenei maimed by a bomb; June 28: the Hafte Tir bombing kills Chief Justice Beheshti and some seventy officials. August 30: President Rajai and PM Bahonar assassinated. October: Khamenei elected president — beginning the ascent that governs Iran to this day. The Islamic Republic's ruling order crystallized in 1981.
[14]
Osirak (June 7, 1981) and the Golan Heights Law (December 14, 1981)
Operation Opera destroyed Iraq's Osirak reactor June 7, 1981. On December 14, 1981 the Knesset extended Israeli law to the Golan Heights — Bashan, territory inside the New Jerusalem footprint drawn in the Assyrian exhibit's overlay. Two dated Israeli acts bracketing the region's year.
[15]
Warren's Gate opened and sealed (1981)
During the Western Wall Tunnel excavation, a two-foot opening was uncovered at Warren's Gate — the Herodian gateway nearest the Holy of Holies, sealed since Saladin's era. Rabbi Yehuda Getz descended with an engineering crew; the breach was discovered within about a month, confronted from above through the cistern manholes, and sealed in concrete by order of the authorities. Getz's diary records his grief in the words of Psalm 79:1. For the first time since Saladin, the nearest way toward the Holiest opened — and was shut again within the month. Sources: Getz diary via Makor Rishon / Ritmeyer; the under-the-Dome tunnel diagram circulating online is repudiated by Ritmeyer himself as a fabrication on his own drawing.
[16]
The stand-down
Getz held a legal theory — that the Status Quo governed the surface, not the spaces beneath — plus the hole, the crew, and the motive. The government sealed the breach instead, choosing containment over breakthrough. Both custodians, from opposite motives, have enforced the same outcome across the entire period: nobody opens the ground. CONVICTION reads the containment as Providence's; the FENCE notes that geopolitical equilibrium predicts the identical behavior.
[17]
The chamber tradition — and Jeremiah's verdict on it
2 Chronicles 35:3 (Josiah and the house Solomon built) → Mishnah Shekalim 6:1–2 (the priest, the different paving stone, the death before telling) → Yoma 53b–54a (hidden in its place vs. exiled to Babylon) → Maimonides, Beit HaBechirah 4:1 (Solomon's prepared hiding places) → Radbaz. Against it: 2 Maccabees 2 (Jeremiah, Nebo). Over all of it: Jeremiah 3:16–17 — the Ark 'shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again,' for Jerusalem itself shall be called the throne of the LORD; completed by Revelation 21:22, the city with no temple. The chamber stays shut for the same reason the temple stays unbuilt: what they housed has moved out permanently.
[18]
The forty-five-year arc, staged
1981: architecture (protocols, personal machine, GUI, academic networks). 1991: the public World Wide Web. 2007: the sieve goes pocket-sized. 2022–2026: self-learning machines answering questions asked in plain speech, adopted at hundred-million-user speed. Each stage documented; the ARC is scaffold, the stages are spine.
[19]
Guinness's precedent — with its spread
H. Grattan Guinness (The Approaching End of the Age, 1878; Light for the Last Days, 1886) tabulated Daniel's periods from Islamic-era anchors and flagged, among his candidate years, 1917 — 1,335 lunar years from the Hegira — three decades in advance. He died in 1910; Jerusalem changed hands December 1917. The fence in the same breath: Guinness published a spread of candidate years, so the hit sits inside a distribution. It remains the only documented case of these numbers aimed in advance at a Jerusalem-status event and landing.
[20]
The honesty cards, consolidated
(a) Day-year is interpretive, not given; the Antiochus near-reading remains the scholarly competitor for Daniel 12's numbers, which themselves overshoot the Maccabean deliverance and have no consensus solution in either direction. (b) The 691 anchor satisfies the abomination clause at best; it cannot satisfy the tamid clause (no continual existed in 691 to alter). (c) Base rate: every era has claimed 12:4; the exhibit's structural answer is the elbow in the curves, and the reader may judge whether an elbow answers the objection. (d) In-year hardship: 1981 also contains the oil glut's onset and two wars — prosperity readings of 1981 failed audit and are not made here. (e) Marker-shopping: three candidate 1981 markers were auditioned in the exhibit's own development before the dated-ledger discipline was applied; that history is disclosed rather than hidden. (f) Acts 1:7 and Daniel 12:13 govern: times and seasons are the Father's; the man who received the numbers was told to rest.
[21]
Pre-registration for the 1,335 terminus
The author's chain reads 691 + 1,335 = 2026. Registered here, in advance and in writing: the blessing-shape of 12:12 is arrival-and-rest for the one who waited — not an incident the news can carry. If the year closes without an unmistakable act of God, the confessed-miss protocol applies to the chain's arithmetic — the spine entries of this exhibit stand regardless, because every one of them is true on ordinary historiography. The stones were chosen so that no calendar can knock them down.
[23]
213 hosts (August 1981) → the connected world
In August 1981 — the month the IBM PC launched — the ARPANET/Internet comprised 213 host computers (early host counts preserved in the Internet growth records, cf. RFC 1296's tabulation). Milestones since: ~562 hosts (1983, the TCP/IP flag day year); ~28,000 (1987); the first website (1991); ~16 million people online (1995); ~1 billion (2005); smartphone era begins (2007); ~5.6 billion people online today (ITU order-of-magnitude). Plotted on the chart on a logarithmic scale: a near-straight line on a log chart is the signature of exponential growth. The curve is the exhibit's argument drawn from life: the whole network of 1981 would fit in one lecture hall.
[24]
The compute curve — peak machine FLOPS, 1981–2026
Indexed benchmark: the Cray-1 class machine of 1981 delivered on the order of 160 MFLOPS. TOP500-era milestones: CM-5 ~60 GFLOPS (1993); ASCI Red breaks 1 TFLOPS (1997); Roadrunner breaks 1 PFLOPS (2008); Frontier breaks 1.1 EFLOPS (2022); El Capitan ~1.7+ EFLOPS (2025). Peak machine compute therefore multiplied on the order of 10 billion-fold across the 45-year span — roughly three orders of magnitude beyond the people curve's ~26-million-fold — before counting the AI-training fleets that now exceed any single flagship. Per living person, available compute went vertical: this is the escape-velocity series. Fence: 'peak machine' is a proxy for total installed compute, chosen because every point is public, dated, and benchmarked; total-compute estimates run higher still.
[22]
Disclosure — the sieve made this
Composed in co-labor between the author and an AI research assistant that retrieved, checked, and counter-checked the ledger — including the corrections it forced on the exhibit's own claims (Ethernet's dates; the under-the-Dome diagram; the tamid clause). The exhibit exists because the tooling it describes exists. Read that as consonance or caution; the ledger permits both.
